The first is the rear engine flathead. The blower is not functional, it hides a carb. I'm sure you have seen some of them before. Most of them have had some magazine ink over the years. I like the #71 and #52 the best. They all seem to have a "little-narrow-body big-headlight" look to them. There is a write-up on his modifieds in the most recent issue of Street Rodder magazine.

some of the most luxurious automobiles and racing cars as well were powered by engines with 16 cylinders. they are very smooth running engines on the whole and with 16 cylinders you can always top your neighbors who only have 8 or less in their car. our first one is a 1933 Marmon V/16. Marmon was always an advanced automobile from the very beginning. it's progenitor Howard Marmon believed in using as much light alloy{aluminum}in his cars as possible. thus this engine is made greatly of aluminum and puts out 200hp which was a lot in 1933. next is the famous Cadillac V/16 in it's first iteration with overhead valves. Cadillac also made one with L-head valve configuration. they came out slightly before Marmon in 1931 from whence this engine comes. third we have the rear mounted Auto-Union type C V/16 in one of the Auto-Union racing machines of the late 1930's. a sophisticated, light weight and quite powerful engine capable of around 500hp. fourth is a 1931 effort by the late great Harry Miller in a racing car of the era. and last the Bugatti U/16 which is actually two straight eights on a single crankcase. this engine has two crankshafts which are geared together to make a single engine.

i had no idea there were so many Mercedes pickups. i think most have been after market conversions but not all. the second, third and fourth pictures are all factory efforts.

first here is a picture from WW1 of a Fokker D7 doing a loop. next we have a 1951 Tempo Matador which is powered by an aircooled flat four VW engine driving the front wheels. third a picture of a really nice 1955 Mercedes-Benz 170 pickup truck. fourth a Goliath 3 wheeled woodie from early 1950's and last a DKW from the same time frame. these last two use two stroke gasoline engines.

Round 2 of Inline 8 Buicks. These are a little more streetable than the last batch. Everything from 2 carbs to 3, 4 and six carbs, a blower and finally the red Buick is running a twin turbocharged strauight 8!

here are some pics of some beautiful old engines from the last century. first are two pics of a 327 cu.in. Packard straight 8 which has been supercharged and used in a hot rod. i have had a couple of the stock Packard 327 engines and they are good enough to more than keep up with modern traffic. this hot rod was in a 2010 issue of the magazine Hotrod. next is a pic of 1931 Bentley 8 litre straight 8. fourth is the 1929 Bugatti T-45 16 cylinder engine i think this was 3.8 litres in displacement. and finally a very attractive 1934 Alfa-Romeo P3 engine.

Barney Oldfield at Hutchinson 1912

here are some pictures of the famous early racer Barney Oldfield racing a Christie front wheel drive racer in Hutchinson, KS at the fair grounds 1912. this particular car used a 135hp V/4 engine with a displacement of 1237 cu.in. the first 3 pics are of Barney and the last one is another shot of racing at Hutchinson in 1912. thanx to mr. garage for putting Christie's on my mind. Walter Christie was an early proponent of front wheel drive and built several racing cars with the system.

i could not help myself, these panel trucks are so nice i had to do more. first is a magnificent International panel from the late 1930's. second is a colorful 1954 Chevrolet that has been somewhat changed from it's stock form. third is a beautiful 1942 Diamond T which looks like at least a 1-ton to me. fourth is the excellent 1930 Ford Model A. and last a far out 1936 Dodge with fender skirts. those 1936 Dodges with side mount spares are one of the most stylish panels ever made in my opinion although i like them all.

panel trucks, when did you last see one? another great body style of the past no longer with us because of box vans and suv's. we start off with a gloriously red 1960 Ford followed by a 1939 Dodge 1-ton one of a kind body design from DeKalb Wagon Co. next we have a fine little American Austin of the mid-thirties of the last century. fourth is a nice 1949 Chevrolet and last the 1946 Jeep 1/2t. panel truck. my friend Henry and myself each had one of these, they had 4cyl. f-head engines with overdrive transmissions and got pretty good mileage on the highway. we drove Henry's to California and back in 1971 to visit some er...um...farming operations.

these things were at one time quite popular, however, since the 1960's they seem to have faded out. here are some nice ones. first is a 1950 Chevrolet. next is a 1948 Crosley third a 1941 Plymouth and fourth a 1955 Rambler American{i did not know they made these}. and last a neat little 1936 Willys model 77 sedan delivery.

here are some pictures of the Japanese motorcycle industries big four, Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki and Yamaha. first is the Honda Dream D 98 cc. of 1949. next is Yahamas first the YS-1 of 125cc. 1954. third is the Meihatsu 125 Deluxe by Kawasaki Heavy Industries 1956. and last the Diamond Free by Suzuki 60cc. 1953. they have all come a long way since producing these motorcycles.

Iver Johnson a forgotten brand for the most part

Iver Johnson was once upon a time a major North American manufacturer of bicycles, guns and motorcycles. perhaps best known for their revolvers Iver Johnson is a name we never hear anymore except for collectors of the brand. the first picture is an ad touting the defensive capabilites and safety of the Iver Johnson safety hammer revolver. next is a picture of same in .38 s&w caliber. third we have a 1914 Iver Johnson single cylinder motorcycle followed by the 1915 V/twin. last a picture of an Iver Johnson bicycle with the truss bridge frame. interestingly enough both former president McKinley and Robert Kennedy were assassinated with Iver Johnson revolvers...McKinley with a .32 and Kennedy with a .22.

Marmon, one of the most famous names of luxury automobiles from the first third of the last century. from 1902 until 1933 Marmons were known for being well built, reliable and luxurious. starting with an air cooled V/2 engine and finishing with a massive liquid cooled V/16 Marmon was one of the best engineered vehicles of the day. even though the Marmon automobile is gone once in awhile you may see a Marmon truck on the road. our first picture is of the 1911 Marmon Wasp winner of the 1911 Indianapolis 500. next is a 1923 Marmon speedster and third a 1930 Marmon sedan. fourth is the mighty Marmon V/16 engine {Cadillac was the only other American manufacturer to use a V/16}. and last the 1933 Marmon 16 cylinder Sedan the last year of Marmon automobile production.

from 1899 until 1929 the Locomobile was a well known American automobile. our first picture here is of the famous 1906 Old 16 Locomobile racer which won the Vanderbilt Cup in 1908. next is a 1904 model and 3rd is a picture of a Locomobile 4cyl. engine. 4th is a 1914 model and last a massive 1925 Locomobile model 48 Sportif.
